Colonial Courthouse - Williamsburg Virginia Metal Print
This Williamsburg Virginia metal print features the 1771 Colonial Courthouse. This old Georgian building is actually one of the buildings in Williamsburg that is not a reconstruction. The original building was still in use into the 20th century when it was purchased to be part of the living history museum at Colonial Williamsburg. Williamsburg has a story similar to some of the quaint old villages in England. Its prosperous period was in Colonial times. After the capitol was moved to Richmond, Williamsburg went into a period of decline. But that is why genuine old buildings like the Colonial Courthouse survived into our modern times. There was simply never any need to replace it. In a larger city it would likely have been rebuilt several times over in the centuries that have passed.
The thing that caught my eye most about the architecture of the old courthouse was the absence of columns. The portico was never intended to be supported by columns. And one can easily imagine they would overpower a small building such as this one, but we're so used to seeing Georgian buildings of this style with columns, at first glance it seemed strange. Do you agree?
This artwork is based on a photo from my visit to Williamsburg, Virginia years ago. On a late summer afternoon the sunlight is slightly obscured by the trees with a beautiful effect. If you take a close look there are reenactors seated in the shade on the other side of the steps - enjoying a brief respite from the heat of the day?
What attracts you to this Williamsburg scene? Are you a fan of American Colonial history or perhaps you have roots in Virginia's historic coast?
