Friendship of Salem - Tall Ship Greeting Card
The subject of this tall ship greeting card is the Friendship of Salem in harbor at Derby Wharf in Salem, Massachusetts near Boston. This 171-foot replica was built in 2000 is based on a 1797 East Indiaman. It spends much of the year in Salem but does go on special sailings periodically. If you've ever seen it, you know this tall ship certainly has the feel of 18th century sailing ship.
I had never heard of the Friendship of Salem before spending a day out of Boston roaming the historic streets of Salem. Getting to see such a storied place alone was worth the time spent there but the old architecture and finding this replica tall ship made it an extra special trip. The image on this card has long been one of my most popular ones from New England. I'm sure in part that's because of how much people love these old tall ships, but I think it's also the quality of the light on that winter day and the composition that includes Derby Wharf, the old Customs House and the city of Salem in general. There's a real sense of location in this Salem greeting card don't you agree?
What attracts you to this scene from Salem?
