Newgrange Panorama - Megalithic Ireland Greeting Card
This Megalithic Ireland greeting card features a portion of a Newgrange Panorama. Newgrange is an ancient astronomically aligned passage tomb. And when I say ancient, it predates the Egyptian pyramids. In Irish, the Newgrange site is known as Sí an Bhrú.
Although my visit was a bit late for the winter solstice, I did visit on a winter day in late January and one gets a sense of the alignment with the sun even then as you can see in this sweeping view of the archaeological site. The dark interior of the tomb is lit by the sun on day of the winter solstice. What exactly the significance was to the prehistoric people who built it is lost with them but one could certainly imagine some sort of rebirth of the ancestors buried within.
The Newgrange monument is part of a larger site in County Meath near to the River Boyne. The Brú na Bóinne complex includes other passage tombs, standing stones, mounds, and more. It's listed UNESCO World Heritage site - that almost goes without saying doesn't it!
Have you explored Newgrange as seen in the image on this greeting card? Or is it still a dream and you love ancient prehistory? I certainly hope you'll share your thoughts on this Newgrange image and what about it caught your eye.
