Rose Island Lighthouse - Newport Rhode Island 5x7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.
This original Newport Rhode Island greeting cards features artwork of a rainy evening in the skies over the Rose Island Lighthouse. This 1870 lighthouse was removed from service in the 1970s but thankfully it has been restored and kept in good repair by a local group who has preserved this historic light. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and the lantern was re-lit in 1992 as a private aid to navigation. In addition to the light itself being historic, it's built on historic foundations. The curved wall you see is actually the southwest bastion of old Fort Hamilton.
I've depicted the historic Rose Island lighthouse with its steady red light against a backdrop of stormy skies. You can even see lighting on the horizon over the waters of Narragansett Bay. This particular subject was requested by more than one person and when I saw that beautiful mansard roof and the general Victorian style I was hooked! Not that lighthouses are ever a hard sell for me. I wish I had more time as they are a favorite subject. I've yet to see one big or tall, in ruins or well kept that I wasn't intrigued.
How about you? What attracts you to the image on this Newport Rhode Island greeting card? Have you visited this lighthouse or do you simply love lighthouses in general, too?
