St Albans Cathedral - UK Greeting Card
This UK greeting card features St Albans Cathedral which locals refer to more often as "The Abbey." And historically it was an Abbey but not since the 16th century dissolution of the monasteries. The longer name it sometimes goes by is The Cathedral & Abbey Church of Saint Alban.
St Albans Cathedral is said to be the oldest site of Christian worship in Britain. It was once home to the shrine for St Alban who was martyred in Roman times. The Abbey grew around that and onto the present day cathedral. The current church building is a mix of architectural heritage. The tower you can see near the center of this image is apparently part of the Norman church while the Gothic facade is from a Victorian era renovation. The church was in a sad state of repair by this point in history so while it may not have been in keeping with the original architecture the repairs were sorely needed or we might be looking at a grassy meadow today.
On the summer day I visited, the skies were picture perfect down to that amazing reflection of light in the sky. I'm not exactly sure what atmospheric condition caused it but it wasn't simply on my camera lens. I saw that with my naked eyes that afternoon. The sun was behind my back in this picture but there was a bright almost star-like lighting in the clouds over St Albans Cathedral that afternoon. It certainly made for a memorable image of the cathedral on this card, didn't it?
