The subject of this Montezuma Georgia art print is the 1930 St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church. This simple brick building on Whiteline Street is adjacent to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. This area was traditionally known as Duncan's bottom and was historically an African American neighborhood.
Although there are several churches in the neighborhood this is the oldest surviving church building. It looks un-used now but I wanted to capture it as it was in the past. It may be somewhat unimaginative, but I call this print, Sunday Morning. The well-dressed family on the steps was a nod to memories of this Sunday ritual.
