The Lady Chapel - Historic St Albans Art Print
The subject of this Historic St Albans art print is the Lady Chapel at the cathedral there. Referred to most simply as "The Abbey" it's more correctly St Albans Cathedral or the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban. Parts of the medieval building date back to Norman times but the history of The Abbey is older still. In fact it's named for Britain's first Christian martyr who lived nearby in Roman times. Following the dissolution of the monasteries the old abbey fell into disrepair and was ultimately subject to an extensive restoration in Victorian times. The appearance of much of the building was dramatically changed from how it looked in the middle ages, but I've read that the Lady Chapel is one of the best preserved parts of the old church. The restoration of this part of the church was begun under the direction of the noted English architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott.
The artwork in this print is based off one of my own photos from my day spent visiting the historic Abbey at St Albans. the light flooding the old stained glass windows was simply breath taking and makes for a special scene that gives one an idea of the purpose of these beautiful old windows in historic churches like this one.
