The Old Curiosity Shop - Dickensian London Art Print
This Dickensian London art print features The Old Curiosity Shop on Portsmouth Street. What captured my attention most about this building was how it is surrounded by modern London and its comparatively larger buildings. It seemed like a fairy tale lost in the everyday world.
I think the setting has much to do with my decision to depict this as a rainy London scene. Of course, it rains in London plenty so that part is not so much fictional. But The warm lights from the windows of The Old Curiosity Shop set it apart from the surrounding street.
Now there's disagreement over whether this little shop really inspired Charles Dickens' novel of the same name. But it was close to where Dickens lived and he is said to have visited the shop. It was not, however, known as The Old Curiosity Shop until after the release of the book in 1841.
Whether or not this was the inspiration, it's truly a piece of Dickensian London, already an old building even then. Built circa 1567, it was a gift from Charles II to one of his mistresses. It has survived not only the Blitz in modern history but the great fire of 1666. Unsurprisingly this little survivor is a protected building today. And a beautiful inspiration for atmospheric art today and possibly in Dickens' day as well.
